ياO صاحِfriend قُلsay لِلرَبعِto the campsite هَلwhether يَتَكَلَّمُit speaks
فَيُبينَand makes clear عَمّاabout what سيلَit was asked أَوor يَستَعجِمُremains mute
O friend, speak to the campsite: will it speak,
and answer what it was asked, or remain mute?
فَثَنىthen he turned مَطيَّتَهُhis mount عَلَيَّtoward me وَقالَand said ليto me
إِسأَلask وَكَيفَand how يَبينُspeaks clearly رَسمٌa trace أَعجَمُmute
Then he turned his mount toward me and said:
“Ask—but how can a speechless trace give answer?”
دَرَجَتswept عَلَيهِover it العاصِفاتُthe storm winds فَقَدso indeed عَفَتhave vanished
آياتُهُits traces إِلّاexcept ثَلاثٌthree جُثَّمُcrouching
Storm winds have swept over it; gone are
its traces, save three crouching hearthstones.
عُجتُI turned القَلوصَthe young she-camel بِهِtoward it وَعَرَّجَand turned aside صُحبَتيmy companions
وَكَفَفتُand I checked غَربَthe gush دُموعِof tears عَينٍof an eye تَسجُمُthat streams
I turned the young she-camel toward it, and my companions turned aside,
and checked the flood of tears from a streaming eye.
أُدمُwhite-coated الظِباءِthe gazelles بِهِat it تُراعيkeep watch خِلفَةًin turns
وَسِخالُهاand their fawns فيin رَسمِهِits traces تَتَبَغَّمُbleat softly
White gazelles there keep watch in turn,
and their fawns bleat softly amid its traces.
وَثَنىand renewed صَبابَةَthe longing قَلبِهِof his heart بَعدَafter البِلىfading
وَرَقاءُa gray dove ظَلَّتkept on فيamong الغُصونِthe branches تَرَنَّمُsinging
And his heart’s longing, after fading, was revived
by a gray dove that kept singing among the branches.
غَرِدَتshe warbled عَلىon فَنَنٍa bough فَأَسعَدَand joined in شَجوَهاher lament
وُرقٌgray doves يُجِبنَthey answer كَماas اِستَجابَresponded المَأتَمُthe mourning gathering
She sang upon a bough; her lament was joined
by gray doves answering like a gathering of mourners.
هَلwill? عَيشُناour life بِمِنىًat Mina يَعودُreturn كَعَهدِناas in our former days
إِذwhen لاnot نُراعُwe are frightened وَلاand not يُطاعُare obeyed اللُوَّمُthe reproachers
Will our life at Mina return as we knew it,
when we knew no fear and reproachers went unheeded—
أَيّامَin the days when هِندٌHind لاnot تُطيعُshe obeys مُحَرِّشاًan instigator
خَطِلَreckless in المَقالِspeech وَسِرُّناand our secret لاnot يُعلَمُis known
those days when Hind obeyed no mischief-maker,
reckless in his speech, and our secret was unknown?
وَعَشيَّةًand one evening حَبَسَتshe held back فَلَمand did not تَفتَحopen فَماa mouth
بِكَلامِهاthrough her speech مِنof كاشِحٍa spiteful foe يَتَنَمَّمُwho spreads tales
And one evening she held back, not opening the mouth
of a spiteful talebearer through her words.
نَظَرَتshe looked إِلَيكَtoward you وَذوand Dhu شِبامٍShibam دونَهاbefore her
نَظراًa gaze يَكادُalmost بِسِرِّهاof her secret يَتَكَلَّمُspeaks
She looked at you, with Dhu Shibam before her,
with a gaze that almost spoke her secret.
فَأَبانَso made clear رَجعُthe return الطَرفِof the glance أَنthat لاdo not تَرحَلَنdepart (emphatic)
حَتّىuntil يُجِنَّenfolds الناسُthe people لَيلٌa night مُظلِمُdark
Her returning glance made plain: “Do not depart
until a dark night enfolds the people.
فَلَعَلَّso perhaps غِبَّthe late hours اللَيلِof the night يَستُرُconceals مَجلِساًa meeting
فيهِin it يُوَدَّعُis bid farewell عاشِقٌa lover وَيُسَلَّمُand is greeted
Perhaps the late hours of night will conceal a meeting
where a lover is bid farewell and greeted.”
فَأَتيتُso I came أَمشيwalking بَعدَماafter نامَfell asleep العِدىthe foes
وَأَجَنَّهُمand shrouded them لِلنَومِfor sleep جونٌa dark night أَدهَمُpitch-black
So I came on foot after the foes had fallen asleep,
and a pitch-black night had shrouded them in sleep.
فَإِذاand behold مَهاةٌan oryx doe فيamong مَهاًoryx بِخَميلَةٍin a thicket
أُدمٍwhite-coated أَطاعَyielded لَهُنَّto them وادٍa valley مُلحِمُlush with growth
And behold: an oryx doe among oryx in a thicket,
white-coated; a lush valley lay at their command.
حَيَّيتُهاI greeted her فَتَبَسَّمَتand she smiled فَكَأَنَّهاand she seemed like
عِندَduring التَبَسُّمِthe smiling مُزنَةٌa raincloud تَتَبَسَّمُsmiling
I greeted her; she smiled, as though she were,
in her smile, a raincloud smiling.
وَتَضَوَّعَتand she diffused fragrance مِسكاًmusk وَسُرَّand was gladdened فُؤادُهاher heart
فَسُرورُهاso her joy بادٍplain لِمَنto whoever يَتَوَسَّمُdiscerns signs
Musk wafted from her, and her heart rejoiced;
her joy was plain to a discerning eye.
فَغَنيتُso I stayed جَذلاناًdelighted وَقَدand indeed جَذِلَتshe rejoiced بِناin us
نَبغيwe seek بِذَلِكَthrough that رَغمَthe humiliation مَنof whoever يَتَرَغَّمُseethes with resentment
I lingered in delight, while she rejoiced in our company;
we sought through this to spite whoever resented it.
ثُمَّthen اِنصَرَفتُI departed وَكانَand was آخِرُthe last قَولِهاof her words
أَنthat سَوفَwill يَجمَعُناbring us together إِلَيكَwith you المَوسِمُthe pilgrimage season
Then I departed, and her last words were:
“The pilgrimage season will bring us together with you.”
