    Have you not asked the deserted dwelling

    for an answer—would it withhold one, or speak?

    There I remembered some of what had passed,

    And one who grieves is right to remember:

    كِساءً وَبُردَينِ أَن يُمطَرا

    The two lovers' night together, when they layered

    a blanket and two cloaks lest rain fall on them;

    And the walk of three women there, late at night,

    who went out to visit a lover:

    Two oryx cows escorted a calf,

    smooth of neck, with eyes of striking black and white,

    بِ سَهلِ الرُبى طَيُّبٍ أَعفَرا

    to a meeting place beyond the domed

    tents, with gentle slopes, pleasant and dust-colored;

    لِ رَخواً مَفاصِلُها مُعصِرا

    And a dark-eyed, companionable girl like the crescent

    moon, supple-jointed, just reaching womanhood;

    And another who offered herself as ransom and prayed for us

    to be concealed whenever she feared a watchful eye.

    They rose and said, 'Oh, if only we

    could see our night endure for months,

    and these people knew nothing of our pleasures,

    while we spent it all in moonlit conversation!'

    They lost track of the night until there appeared

    the first gleams of a dawn breaking bright.

    And they rose, wiping away our tracks

    with silken cloaks, lest they be followed.

    And they rose, saying, 'If only the day

    had the night stretched out before it, and so came later!'

    That night we fulfilled some of what we desired,

    And it was better suited to conversation.
