طالَgrew long لَيليmy night وَاِعتادَنيand returned to me أَطرابيmy fits of longing
وَتَذَكَّرتُand I recalled باطِليmy follies فيin شَبابيmy youth
My night has grown long, and my restless yearnings have returned.
And I recalled my follies in my youth.
وَتَذَكَّرتُand I recalled مِنof رُقَيَّةَRuqayya ذِكراًa memory
قَدalready مَضىhad passed دارِساًfaded عَلىover الأَحقابِthe ages
And I recalled a memory of Ruqayya,
Long past, faded by the passing ages.
إِنَّindeed وَجديmy yearning بِقُربِكُمfor nearness to you أُمَّO mother of عَمروٍAmr
مِثلُlike وَجدِthe yearning of الصَديthe thirsty one بِبَردِfor the coolness of الشَرابِthe drink
Indeed, my yearning to be near you, Umm Amr,
Is like a thirsty man's yearning for a cool drink.
سَلَّمَmay He send peace اللَهُGod أَلفَa thousand ضِعفٍtimes as much عَلَيكُمupon you
مِثلَlike ماwhat قُلتُمُyou said لَناto us فيin الكِتابِthe letter
May God send you peace a thousandfold,
Like that you wished us in the letter—
عَدَدَas many as التُربِthe dust وَالحِجارَةِand the stones وَالنَقand the mountain passes (word begins)
بِcompletion of the split word 'passes' مِنَof الأَرضِthe earth سَهلِهاits plains وَالظِرابِand the low hills
As many as the grains of dust, the stones, and the mountain passes
Of the earth—its plains and low hills.
