My grief returned to haunt me after a spell of solace;
My sorrow returned after a spell of solace.
a beloved’s phantom passed by at night and kept me awake—
A beloved's phantom came by night and kept me awake—

the phantom of a gazelle dwelling in al-ʿAqīq,
from a gazelle dwelling in al-Aqiq.
whose love has wasted and tormented me.
Her love has worn me thin and tormented me.

The beloved’s dwellings have receded far and grown remote;
The beloved's dwellings have grown distant and remote.

How far the beloved's valley lies from my homeland!

I became bound to her—to my sorrow—and a king
I fell in love with her, to my misery; she was taken
bore her away from me; thus she became my anguish.
away from me by a king, and became my sorrow.

If only she would follow me through life,
So if only she would follow me through life,
and at my death my shroud might enfold her.
and at my death my shroud might enfold her.

O glance—never did I cast one more agonizing:
Oh, what a painful glance I cast!
I never saw her after it, nor did she see me.
I never saw her afterward, nor did she see me.
