هاجَstirred فُؤاديmy heart مَوقِفُa stopping place
ذَكَّرَنيreminded me ماwhat أَعرِفُI know
A stopping place stirred my heart,
recalling to me what I knew:
مَمشايَmy walk ذاتَon a certain لَيلَةٍnight
وَالشَوقُand longing مِمّاamong what يَشغَفُpierces the heart
my walk one night—
and longing pierces the heart—
إِذاwhen suddenly ثَلاثٌthree women كَالدُمىlike figurines
وَكاعِبٌand a girl with budding breasts وَمُسلِفُand an older woman
when suddenly, three women like figurines,
and a girl with budding breasts, and an older woman;
وَبَينَهُنَّand among them صورَةٌa figure
كَالشَمسِlike the sun حينَwhen تُسدِفُit shines forth
and among them was a figure
like the sun when it shines forth.
خَودٌa tender young woman وَقَيرٌfull and heavy نِصفُهاhalf of her
وَنِصفُهاand half of her مُهَفهَفُslender
A young beauty, one half of her full and heavy,
and the other half slender.
قُلتُI said لَهاto her مَنwho أَنتُمُyou all
لَعَلَّperhaps داراًa dwelling تُسعِفُis nearby
I said to her, 'Who are you all?
Perhaps your dwelling is nearby.'
فَاِبتَسَمَتthen she smiled عَنrevealing واضِحٍa gleaming mouth
Then she smiled, revealing a gleaming mouth,
its front teeth white, its moisture dripping.
وَأَومَضَتand she flashed عَنfrom طَرفِهاher eye
ياoh حُسنَهاher beauty إِذwhen تَطرِفُshe blinks
And she flashed a glance—
how lovely she was when she blinked!
وَأَرسَلَتand she reached out فَجاءَنيso there came to me
بَنانُهاher fingers المُطَرَّفُhenna-tipped
And she reached out, and there came to me
her henna-tipped fingers:

نُحيwe shall welcome you بِهاduring it وَنُلطِفُand treat you tenderly
'Spend one night with us;
we shall welcome you that night and treat you tenderly.'
باتَتshe spent the night وَليand I had مِنfrom بَذلِهاher giving
حَمشُdelicate اللِثاتِthe gums أَعجَفُlean
She stayed the night, and freely offered me
a fine-lipped mouth with delicate gums.
فَبِتُّso I spent لَيليmy night كُلَّهُall of it
تَرشِفُنيshe sips me وَأَرشِفُand I sip
So I spent the whole of my night
with her sipping my lips, and I sipping hers.
إِخالُI imagine ثَلجاًsnow طَعمَهُits taste
قَدhad خالَطَتهُmingled with it قَرقَفُstrong wine
Its taste, I thought, was snow
mingled with strong wine.
لَمّاwhen دَناdrew near تَقارُبٌthe approaching end
مِنof لَيلِناour night وَمَصرِفٌand a time to depart
When there drew near the close
of our night, and the time to depart,
قالَتshe said لَناto us وَدَمعُهاwhile her tears
وَجداًout of longing عَليناfor us يَذرِفُstream
she said to us, her tears
streaming in longing for us:
لَهفيmy anguish! وَلَيسَand is not نافِعيof help to me
عَلَيكُمُfor you التَلَهُّفُanguished yearning
'How I grieve! Yet it does me no good,
this yearning for you.'
قالَتshe said وَلِمand why تَسأَلُناdo you ask us
وَالدارُand the dwelling عَنكَaway from you تَصرِفُdraws us away
She said, 'And why do you question us,
when our home draws us away from you?
وَالدارُand the dwelling عَنكَfrom you ضَربَةٌfar distant
وَنَأيُناand our separation مُستَشرِفُlooming ahead
Our home lies far from you,
and our parting looms ahead.
نَحنُwe حَجيجٌpilgrims ضَمَّناgathered us
فَمَنso who يُرىis seen المُعَرَّفُthe one identified
We are pilgrims, brought together—
who, then, can be recognized?'
قُلتُI said فَإِنّيfor I am هائِمٌlost in love
صَبٌan ardent lover بِكُمwith you مُكَلَّفُenthralled

I said, 'For I am lost in love,
enamored of you, utterly enthralled.'
قالَتshe said بَلَrather اِنتَyou مازِحٌteasing
ذوone with مَلَّةٍboredom مُستَطرِفُseeking novelty
She said, 'No, you are only teasing,
quick to tire, forever seeking novelty.
لَسناwe are not وَإِنeven if حَدَّثتَناyou speak to us
يَغُرُّناdeceives us ماwhat تَحلِفُyou swear
We are not, though you speak to us,
deceived by the oaths you swear.
وَدِدتُI wish لَوif أَنَّكَthat you فيin
قَولِكَyour words هَذاthis تُنصِفُyou would be fair
I wish that in
these words of yours you would be fair,
تَجزيyou repay بِمِثلِwith the like of وُدِّناour love
قُلتُI said لَهاto her بَلrather أُضعِفُI double it
repaying us with love like ours.'
I said to her, 'Rather, I shall double it.'
