كَتَبَتshe wrote تَعتِبُexpressing reproach الرَبابُal-Rabab وَقالَتand she said
كَتَبَت تَعتِبُ الرَبابُ وَقالَت
قَدindeed أَتاناhas reached us ماwhat قُلتَyou said فيin الأَشعارِthe poems
قَد أَتانا ما قُلتَ في الأَشعارِ
Al-Rabab wrote in reproach and said:
"What you said in verse has indeed reached us:
سادِراًheedlessly عامِداًdeliberately تُشَهِّرُyou publicize بِاِسميmy name
سادِراً عامِداً تُشَهِّرُ بِاِسمي
كَيso that يَبوحَmay divulge الوُشاةُthe talebearers بِالأَسرارِthe secrets
كَي يَبوحَ الوُشاةُ بِالأَسرارِ
heedlessly, deliberately, you make my name public,
so that talebearers may divulge the secrets.
فَاِعتَزِلناso leave us فَلَنfor … will not نُجَدِّدَwe renew وَصلاًa bond
فَاِعتَزِلنا فَلَن نُجَدِّدَ وَصلاً
ماas long as أَضاءَتshine نُجومُstars لَيلٍof night لِسارِfor a night traveler
ما أَضاءَت نُجومُ لَيلٍ لِسارِ
So leave us; we shall not renew our bond
as long as night’s stars shine for a night traveler."
قُلتُI said لاdo not تَصرِميbreak off relations لِتَكثيرِbecause of the exaggerations of واشٍa talebearer
قُلتُ لا تَصرِمي لِتَكثيرِ واشٍ
كاذِبٍlying فيin الحَديثِspeech وَالأَخبارِand reports
كاذِبٍ في الحَديثِ وَالأَخبارِ
I said, "Do not forsake me over the exaggerations of a talebearer
who lies in his speech and reports.
لَمdid not نَبُحwe disclose عِندَهُin his presence بِسِرٍّa secret وَلَكِنbut
لَم نَبُح عِندَهُ بِسِرٍّ وَلَكِن
كَذِبٌa lie ماwhat أَتاكِreached you وَالجَبّارِby the Almighty
كَذِبٌ ما أَتاكِ وَالجَبّارِ
We disclosed no secret in his presence; rather,
what reached you is a lie, by the Almighty.
لاdo not تُطيعيheed فَإِنَّنيfor indeed I لَمdid not أُطِعهُheed him
لا تُطيعي فَإِنَّني لَم أُطِعهُ
أَنتِyou أَهوىthe dearest of الأَحبابِthe beloveds وَالأَجوارِand the neighbors
أَنتِ أَهوى الأَحبابِ وَالأَجوارِ
Do not heed him, for I have not heeded him;
you are the dearest of beloveds and neighbors."
