    فَأَظُنُّ أَنّي زائِرٌ رَمسي

    The miserly woman refused to grant me her favor;

So I think I shall visit my grave.

There is no good in this world or its splendor

If her soul does not accord with mine.

I cannot bear to be apart from her when she appears,

Like the full moon or the sun’s rising rim.

She looked at you with the eye of a doe sustained by herbage,

    Dark-rimmed, amid snub-nosed fawns.

So she took your heart captive when she glanced,

With the charm of her canine teeth and her warmth.

Be generous to him whom you have made ill,

    And left bewildered in uncertainty.

Do not deny him union, and earn

A reward, for there is no harm in that.

And indeed I feared that he might be afflicted

With a touch of madness from love for you.
