ما يَهيجُ المُتَيَّمَ المَحزونا
At the memory of Juml, there returned to the heart
what stirs the sorrowful, love-stricken man.

Indeed, the love that Juml bequeathed
almost laid bare what was kept unspoken and concealed

on Saturday night, when I looked at her
with a glance that drove the heart further into madness.

Indeed, your walk in front of Adi’s house
was a trial and a temptation to the heart.

she faced us like the sun, dazzling the eyes,

Harun said, 'Stop!'—oh, if only I
had obeyed Harun for a moment!

And she turned me away from women, and settled
in a secure abode within the heart’s sanctuary.

Then she grew doubtful, so I cannot discern in her
affection for me, nor any clear aversion.

Yet I hope for union with her,
as one hopes, guessing at the unseen.
