Is it at noon that neighbors are bid farewell,
Or in the evening—or, before then, early in the morning?

That day at Dhu al-Shara, as did borrowed passion,

And love's promptings, and a heart that, when it persists,
Is obstinate and can scarcely be swayed.

A white gazelle's sister won his heart from him,
Full of coquettish charm, a shy maiden, richly perfumed.

Smooth of cheek, full of calf, slender
Of waist, her undergarment tight about her.

In darkness, with curtains screening her.

And what Atiq said about her drew me—
He, versed in beauty, its discerning horse-doctor—

In an assembly, with few in authority:

She is chaste, free of base character
And of gain that brings disgrace.

They described her, and described her so well that
I was almost borne aloft by their lovely description.
فَثَنائيso my praise عَلَيكِof you خَيرُthe best ثَناءٍpraise
إِنif تَقَرَّبتِyou draw near أَوor نَأَتgrows distant بِكِwith you دارُa dwelling
So my praise of you is the finest praise,
Whether you draw near or a dwelling bears you far away.

And you fill my thoughts when I walk sound and well,
And my night-wandering dreams and poems.

You are our preoccupation and our greatest desire,
And the subject of our talk, even when you go unvisited.

And I find the day long when you are far away,
And the nights short when you draw near.

Nothing's loveliness has come near her beauty,
Save the midmorning sun, with daylight upon it.
فَلَوَthen if أَنّيthat I خَشيتُfeared أَوor خِفتُdreaded قَتلاًbeing killed

Then, had I felt fear or dreaded being killed—
Except that fate's decrees cannot be averted—

I would have shunned her, by whom people are bewitched;
And yet everything has its allotted measure.
فَلَنَفسيso indeed my own self أَحَقُّmore deserving بِاللَومِof blame عَمداًdeliberately

So I myself, acting knowingly, am more to blame,
Wherever I was, on the day the pebble-heaps were thronged.
