أَصبَحَhas become القَلبُthe heart لِلقَتولِby the slaying woman صَريعاstruck down
مُستَهاماlove-bewildered بِذِكرِهاat the thought of her مَردوعاsubdued
The heart has fallen, struck down by the slayer,
Love-bewildered at the thought of her, subdued.
سَلَبَتنيshe robbed me عَقليof my reason غَداةَthe morning تَبَدَّتshe appeared
بَينَbetween خَودَينِtwo young maidens كَالغَزالَينِlike two gazelles رَيعاboth were startled
She stole my reason the morning she appeared
Between two maidens like two startled gazelles.
وَهيَand she كَالشَمسِlike the sun إِذwhen بَدَتit appeared فيin ضُحاهاits morning brightness
فَأَبانَتand it revealed لِلناظِرينَto the onlookers طُلوعاa rising
And she was like the sun when it appeared in its morning radiance
And made its rising plain to those who gazed.
فَرَمَتنيthen she shot me بِسَهمِهاwith her arrow ثُمَّthen دافَتshe mixed
لِبَناتِfor the daughters الفُؤادِof the heart سَمّاًpoison نَقيعاdeadly
Then she shot me with her arrow, and mixed
A deadly poison for the daughters of the heart.
لُمتُI reproached قَلبيmy heart فيfor حَبِّهاloving her فَعَصانيand it disobeyed me
وَلَقَدand indeed كانَit had been ليto me زَماناًfor a time مُطيعاobedient
I reproached my heart for loving her, and it defied me,
Though for a time it had been obedient to me.
فَأَرىso I see القَلبَthe heart قَدalready تَنَشَّبَhas taken hold فيهِin it
حُبُّlove هِندٍof Hind فَماand so it does not يُريدُwish نُزوعاto break free
So I see the heart, in which has lodged
The love of Hind; it has no wish to break free.
قادَهُled it الحَينُdoom نَحوَهاtoward her فَأَتاهاand it came to her
غَيرَnot عاصٍdisobedient إِلىtoward هَواهاher love سَريعاswiftly
Doom led it toward her, and it came to her,
Unresisting, hastening toward her love.
قُلتُI said لَمّاwhen تَخَلَّسَstole away الوَجدُlove's anguish عَقليmy reason
لِسُلَيمىto Sulayma إِدعيsummon رَسولاًa messenger مُريعاquick to return
I said, when love's anguish stole my reason,
To Sulayma: “Summon a messenger quick to return;
فَاِبعَثيهِthen send him فَأَخبِريهِand inform him بِعُذريof my excuse
وَاِشفَعيand intercede ليfor me فَقَدfor indeed غَنيتِyou once were شَفيعاan intercessor
Send him, and tell him my excuse,
And intercede for me, for you once were an intercessor
عِندَwith هِندٍHind وَذاكَand that عَصرٌan age تَوَلّىhas passed
بانَdeparted مِنّاfrom us فَماand so it does not يُريدُwish رُجوعاto return
With Hind”—and that was an age now past,
Departed from us, unwilling to return.
فَأَتَتهاso she went to her فَأَخبَرَتهاand informed her بِعُذريof my excuse
ثُمَّthen قالَتshe said أَتَيتِyou have done أَمراًa thing بَديعاstrange
She went to her and told her my excuse,
Then said: “You have done a strange thing;
فَاِقبَليso accept العُذرَthe excuse مِتُّmay I die قَبلَكِbefore you مِنهُfrom him
وَهيَwhile she تُذريwas shedding لِماbecause of what عَناهاdistressed her الدُموعاtears
So accept his excuse—may I die before you!”
As she shed tears for what distressed her.
فَأَصاخَتso she listened closely لِقَولِهاto her words ثُمَّthen قالَتshe said
عادَhas become هَذاthis مِنَof الحَديثِthe talk رَجيعاstale repetition
She listened closely to her words, then said:
“This talk has become stale repetition.
اِرجَعيgo back نَحوَهُtoward him فَقوليand say وَعَيشيby my life
لاmay you not تَهَنّأtake pleasure بِماin what فَعَلتَyou have done رَبيعاfor a spring
Go back to him and say: ‘By my life,
May what you have done bring you no joy for a spring!
خِلتَyou thought أَنّاthat we نُغَيِّرُwould alter الوَصلَthe affection مِنّاfrom us
عَنكَaway from you أَمor خِلتَyou thought حَبلَناour cord مَقطوعاsevered
Did you think we would turn our affection
Away from you, or think our cord was severed?’”
فَأَتَتنيthen she came to me فَأَخبَرَتنيand informed me بِأَمرٍof a matter
شَفَّwasted جِسميmy body وَطارَand flew قَلبيmy heart مَروعاterrified
She came to me and told me something
That wasted my body and sent my heart flying in terror.
فَرَجَعتُso I sent back الرَسولَthe messenger بِالعُذرِwith the excuse مِنّيfrom me
نَحوَtoward هِندٍHind وَلَمand did not أَخَفexpect أَنthat تَريعاshe would return
So I sent the messenger back with an excuse from me
To Hind, not expecting her to return.
فَحَيَيناso we came alive بِوُدِّهاthrough her affection بَعدَafter يَأسٍdespair
مِنof هَواهاher love فَعادَand it became again وُدّاًaffection جَميعاentirely
Then we came alive through her affection, after despair
Of her love; all was affection once again.
