O reproachful one who sought to forsake me

And part from me, though I knew nothing of it.

Is it to kill me that I see you turn away from me,

Or estrangement, or coldness? You have done enough.

You have worn away my bones and body,

Though our love accords with yours.

We have been afflicted, yet we give nothing.

Alas for my soul! O beloved, how cold you are!

In speech you turn away from your soul’s longing

For us, revealed in your gaze whenever we see you.

And whenever I am mentioned, the mention of me startles you,

And often the thought of you startles us.

And whenever you hear a name like mine,

Your eyes grow wet with tears for me.

And whenever the slanderers speak ill of us to you,

You unjustly believe whoever comes to you.

May his tongue be paralyzed if I love

Anyone among Adam’s children this morning but you.
