Lessen your estrangement, Umm Bakr, for
the end of wars is but a return to peace.
فَوَاللَهِFor, by God ماnot لِلعَيشِfor life ماso long as لَمnot أُلاقِكُمI meet you
وَماnor لِلهَوىfor love إِذwhen ماnot تُزارينَyou are visited مِنany طَعمِsavor
For, by God, neither life, so long as I do not meet you,
nor love, when you go unvisited, has any savor.
وَماand no لِيَfor me صَبرٌpatience عَنكُمُapart from you قَدindeed عَلِمتُمُyou know
وَلاnor لَكِfor you عَنّاapart from us مِنany عَزاءِsolace وَلاnor عَزمِresolve
And I have no patience apart from you, as you well know,
nor have you, apart from us, any solace or resolve.
فَقوليSo say لِواشيناto our slanderer كَماas كُنتُI was قائِلاًsaying

So say to our slanderer, as I used to say
to your slanderer: 'To your chagrin, I disobeyed—in spite of you.'
كِلاناeach of us أَرادَsought الصَرمَseparation ماas much as اِسطاعَhe could جاهِداًstriving hard
فَأَعياbut he faltered قَريباًclose مِنَto السَماحَةِyielding وَالصَرمِand separation
Each of us sought separation, striving to the utmost,
but faltered on the verge of yielding and parting.
أَلَمDid … not? تَعلَميyou know ماwhat كُنتُI was آلَيتُI swore فيكُمُconcerning you

Did you not know what I had sworn concerning you?
And you swore never to speak of me by name.
