وَقالَتand she said لِتِربَيهاto her two age-mates غَداةَthe morning لَقيتُهاI met her

And she said to her two companions the morning I met her,
her eye streaming with tears and kohl:
بِذيat Dhu الشَريِal-Shari هَلis there? مِنany مَوقِفٍa stopping-place تَقِفانِهِyou two stop at it
لَعَلَّperhaps المُغيرِيَّal-Mughiri الغَداةَthis morning يُوَدِّعُhe bids farewell
“At Dhu al-Shari, is there a place where you two might stop?
Perhaps al-Mughiri will bid farewell this morning.”
فَلَمّاthen when رَأَتshe saw كُبراهُماthe elder of the two ماwhat بِأُختِهاafflicted her sister

Then, when the elder of the two saw what ailed her sister,
she fell silent, neither assenting nor refusing.
وَقالَتand she said لَهاto her الصُغرىthe younger هَداكِhas led you لِماto what أَرىI see
هَوىًpassion غَيرُnot مَعصيٍّdisobeyed وَلُبٌّand a mind مُشيَّعُbold
And the younger said to her, “You have been led to what I see
by unresisted passion and a bold mind.
أَيَخفىcan it be hidden? عَلىon ظَهرٍopen ground وُقوفُthe standing مَطِيَّةٍa riding-camel
بِراكِبِهاwith its rider هَذاthis مِنَof الأَمرِthe matter أَشنَعُmore shameful
Can a camel standing on open ground go unnoticed,
with its rider? This is more shameful still.”
