    وَحَذِرتُ البَينَ مِنها فَاِستَمَر

    Hind gave notice of an early parting;

and I feared parting from her, yet it persisted.

Hind sent us a trusted messenger

between us: “Come to a beloved who has arrived.

So know for certain that a lover will visit

when he is hidden from every eye and gaze.”

I said, “Welcome to you, a visitor

who has left the heart with anguish and memories.”

So I prepared for her in secret,

when night declined and the moon hid itself.

While I waited for her where I sat,

night suddenly cast me into a stupor because of her.

Nothing startled me after I had taken a brief sleep

except her scent of musk and aloeswood.

I said, “Who is this?” Then she answered thus:

“I am the one you made endure long sleeplessness.

What have I to do with love? It has worn me out.

This came through decree and destiny.

Would that I had never been made to love you!

Every day, because of you, I am in tears.

Whenever you promise me, you fail me,

then come, when you come, with excuses.

May my eye burn with tears! If you do it again,

you will surely reach out with a severed cord.

God preserve your life—will you not pity me?

Or is your heart toward us harder than stone?”

I said, when she had finished speaking,

and my tears were like cascading pearls:

“You, O delight of my eye—know this—

are to my soul the equal of my hearing and sight.

So leave off blaming me, and pardon me,

and disregard the words of that insolent brother of lies.”

Then she let me taste a sweetness I thought

was bees’ honey mingled with cool water,

and with wine aged in Babylon,

like a cock’s eye, or the wine of Jadar.

So my night passed in bliss,

    now kissing her without restraint,

and tearing her wrap away from a slender form,

slim of belly, full about the hips.

So we took our pleasure through the night, until

the cock crowed and remembrance stirred.

She shook me, then said in alarm,

while tears came rushing from her eyes:

“Rise, my soul’s beloved; do not disgrace me!

Dawn has appeared, and here is the predawn chill.”

Then she departed with three bashful maidens,

like monks’ images, or wide-eyed wild cattle.

I shall not forget her words as long as there coos

    a ring-necked dove upon a milkweed branch,

when I resolved upon what she disliked:

“This is how one who has broken faith behaves.”
