نادِcall out to الَّذينَthose who تَحَمَّلواthey set out كَيso that يَربَعواthey halt
كَيماso that يُوَدِّعَmay bid farewell ذوone possessing هَوىًlove وَيُوَدَّعُand be bidden farewell
Call out to those who have set out, that they may halt,
so a lover may bid farewell and be bidden farewell.
ماnot كُنتُI was أَخشىI fear بَعدَafter ماthat قَدalready أَجمَعواthey resolved
وَفُراقُهُمand their parting بِالكُرهِagainst one's will أَنthat لاnot يَربَعواthey halt
I had not feared, after they had made their decision,
though their parting was against my will, that they would not halt,
أَنthat يَفجَعواthey bereave دَنِفاًa lovesick man مُصاباًstricken قَلبُهُhis heart
مِنfrom حُبِّهِمlove of them فيin كُلِّevery يَومٍday يُردَعُis rebuked
that they would leave a lovesick man bereft, his heart stricken
by love for them, rebuked each day,
حَتّىuntil رَأَيتُI saw حُمولَهُمtheir laden camels وَكَأَنَّهاand as though they were
نَخلٌpalm trees تُكَفكِفُهاbuffets them شَمالٌa north wind زَعزَعُraging
until I saw their laden camels, as though they were
palm trees buffeted by a raging north wind.
وَأَقولُand I say مَنout of جَزَعٍanguish لِعَزَّةَto ʿAzza بَعدَماafter
سارواthey set out وَسالَand flowed بِهِمwith them طَريقٌa road مَهيَعُbroad and open
And in anguish I said to ʿAzza, after
they had set out and a broad road streamed with them:
لَوif كُنتُI were أَملِكُI possess دَفعَwarding off ذاthis لَدَفَعتُهُI would surely have warded it off
عَنّيfrom me وَلَكِنand yet ماnot لِهَذاfor this مَدفَعُa means of averting
‘Had I the power to ward this off, I would have warded it
away from me—but there is no warding this away.’
لَمّاwhen تَذاكَرناwe spoke together وَقَدand already كادَتwere about to بِهِمwith them
بُزُلُfull-grown الجِمالِcamels بِبَطنِin the hollow of قَرنٍQarn تَطلُعُrise
When we spoke together, they were already about to be borne
up through Qarn’s hollow by the full-grown camels,
تَهويthey rush along بِهِنَّwith them إِذاwhen الحُداةُthe camel-drivers تَرَنَّمواthey sang
مَوراًswaying كَماjust as مارَswayed السَفينُships المُقلَعُwith sails hoisted
rushing with the women whenever the camel-drivers sang,
swaying as a ship under sail sways.
سَلَّمتُI offered a greeting فَاِلتَفَتَتthen she turned بِوَجهٍwith a face واضِحٍradiant
كَالبَدرِlike the full moon زَيَّنَadorned ذاكَthat جيدٌa neck أَتلَعُlong and stately
I greeted her; she turned with a radiant face,
like the full moon, graced by a long, stately neck,
وَبِمُقلَتَيand with the two eyes of ريمٍa white gazelle غَضيضٍlowered طَرفُهُits gaze
أَضحىcame to be لَهُfor it بِرِياضِin the meadows of مَرٍّMarr مَرتَعُa pasture
and the eyes of a white gazelle with a downcast gaze,
now finding pasture in the meadows of Marr.
قالَتshe said تُشِيُّعُناyou are seeing us off فَقُلتُso I said صَبابَةًout of longing
إِنَّindeed المُحِبَّthe lover لِمَنfor the one whom يُحِبُّhe loves مُشَيِّعُone who sees off
She asked, ‘Are you seeing us off?’ I replied, full of longing:
‘Indeed, a lover sees off the one he loves.’
فَاِستَرجَعَتthen she said, ‘To God we return’ وَبَكَتand she wept لِماat what قَدhad غالَهاoverwhelmed her
إِنَّindeed المُوَفَّقَthe rightly guided person فَاِعلَمواso know مُستَرجِعُone who says, ‘To God we return’
Then she said, ‘We belong to God and to Him we return,’ and wept at what had overwhelmed her.
Indeed, the rightly guided—know this—say, ‘To God we belong and return.’
فَتَبِعتُهُمso I followed them وَمَعيand with me فُؤادٌa heart موجَعٌaching
صَبٌّpassionately enamored بِقُربِهِمِof being near them وَعَينٌand an eye تَدمَعُweeps
So I followed them, with an aching heart,
yearning for their nearness, and a weeping eye.
