طَرِبتَyou were stirred with emotion وَهاجَتكَand roused you المَنازِلُthe dwellings مِنfrom جَفنٍJafn
رُبَّماsometimes يَعتادُكَrevisits you الشَوقُlonging بِالحُزنِwith sorrow
You were stirred with longing, and the dwellings of Jafn roused you.
Ah, longing sometimes revisits you with sorrow.
مَرَرتُI passed عَلىby أَطلالِthe ruins of زَينَبَZaynab بَعدَهاafter her departure
فَأَعوَلتُهاso I lamented them لَوif only كانَwere إِعوالُهاlamenting them يُغنيcould help
I passed by the ruins of Zaynab’s dwelling after she had gone.
So I lamented them—if only lamenting them could help.
وَقَدand indeed أَرسَلَتshe sent word فيin السِرِّsecret أَنthat قَدindeed فَضَحتَنيyou have disgraced me
وَقَدand indeed بُحتَyou disclosed بِاِسميmy name فيin النَسيبِlove poetry وَلَمand not تَكُنyou were
And she had sent word in secret: “You have disgraced me,
And you have revealed my name in love verse, and you were not...
فَسَرَّفَنيso they called me foolish أَهليmy family وَجُلُّand most of عَشيرَتيmy clan
فَإِنso if كانَis يَهنيكَpleasing to you الَّذيwhat جِئتَyou have done فَليَهنِthen may it please you
So my family and most of my clan have called me foolish.
So if what you have done pleases you, then may it bring you pleasure!
أَضَعتَyou squandered الَّذيwhat قَدalready كانَwas فيin السِرِّsecret بَينَناbetween us
وَسِرُّكَand your secret عِنسيmy she-camel (probably a typo for “with me”) كانَwas فيin أَحصَنِmost impregnable الحِصِنthe fortress
You have squandered what was once secret between us,
While your secret [with me?] was in the most impregnable fortress.”
