لَقَدindeed حَبَّبَتhas endeared نُعمٌNuʿm إِلَيَّto me بِوَجهِهاwith her face
مَسافَةَthe distance ماwhat بَينَbetween الوَتائِرِal-Watāʾir فَالنَقعِand al-Naqʿ
Indeed, Nuʿm has, with her face, made dear to me
the distance between al-Watāʾir and al-Naqʿ.
وَمِنand for أَجلِthe sake of ذاتِthe woman with الخالِthe mole أَعمَدتُI made sore-backed ناقَتيmy she-camel
أُكَلِّفُهاI burden her with سَيرَtravel الكَلالِexhaustion مَعَalong with الظَلعِlameness
And for the woman with the mole I have overstrained my she-camel,
forcing her to travel, exhausted and lame.
وَمِنand for أَجلِthe sake of ذاتِthe woman with الخالِthe mole آلَفُI frequent مَنزِلاًa dwelling
أَحِلُّI lodge بِهِin it لاnot ذاpossessing صَديقٍa friend وَلاnor زَرعِcrops
And for the woman with the mole I frequent a dwelling
where I lodge with neither friend nor crops.
وَمِنand for أَجلِthe sake of ذاتِthe woman with الخالِthe mole يَومَthe day لَقيتُهاI met her
بِمُندَفَعِat the outlet of الأَخبابِal-Akhbāb سابَقَنيraced me دَمعيmy tears
And for the woman with the mole, the day I met her
at the outlet of al-Akhbāb, my tears raced ahead of me.
وَمِنand for أَجلِthe sake of ذاتِthe woman with الخالِthe mole عُدتُI returned كَأَنَّنيas though I were
مُخامِرُafflicted with داءٍa sickness داخِلٍinward وَأَخوand a companion of رِبعِquartan fever
And for the woman with the mole I returned as though I were
a sufferer from inward sickness and a companion of quartan fever.
أَلَمdid ... not? تَرَsee ذاتُthe woman with الخالِthe mole أَنَّthat مَقالَهاher words
لَدىby البابِthe door زادَincreased القَلبَthe heart رَدعاًpain عَلىupon رَدعِpain
Did the woman with the mole not see that her words
by the door added pain upon pain to my heart?
وَأُخرىand another glance لَدىbeside البَيتِthe House العَتيقِancient نَظَرتُهاI cast it
إِليهاtoward her تَمَشَّتit crept فيthrough عِظاميmy bones وَفيand through سَمعيmy hearing
And another glance I cast beside the Ancient House
toward her crept through my bones and through my hearing.
فَلَمso ... did not أَنسَI forget مِلأَشياءِamong the things لاnot أَنسَI forget نَظرَتيmy glance
إِلَيهاat her وَتِربَيهاand her two age-mates وَنَحنُand we لَدىbeside سَلعِSalʿ
So I have not forgotten—of all things, I do not forget my glance
at her and her two age-mates, while we were beside Salʿ.
