    The heart has loved, with a love not base,

    And fulfilled its desires with Umm Ali.

    And fulfilled its desires with her, after

    Those desires had almost gone unfulfilled.

    And its own doom summoned it to the woman

    Who quenches burning thirsts with radiant coquetry.

    Then, with patience, it turned away from her, after

    It had long refused to turn away from her.

    Whenever I said, “It has put her memory aside,”

    The heart returned to what it had forgotten.

    So it dallied and thrilled to the tender maiden who

    Enslaved my heart with a mouth of delicious taste,

    كَالأَقاحي ناعِمِ النَبتِ ثَري

    Cool to taste, with its teeth set apart,

    Like daisies, tender-growing and moist;

    Bright and sweet—whenever she smiles,

    It gleams like lightning amid heaped-up clouds.

    Sweet of saliva—whenever I taste it,

    I say, “Snow blended with fragrant musk.”

    طَرفَ أُمِّ الخِشفِ في عَرفٍ نَدي

    And with a gaze I thought, when she appeared,

    The gaze of a fawn’s mother amid dewy, fragrant herbage;

    كَتَدَلّي قِنوِ نَخلِ المُجتَني

    And with coal-black tresses hanging down,

    Like a date-cluster drooping from the gatherer’s palm;

    واضِحِ السُنَّةِ ذي ثَغرٍ نَقي

    And with a face of lovely form,

    Radiant of countenance, with spotless teeth;

    And with a supple neck adorned

    By pure pearls and radiant rubies.

    And for her I bear a burning longing in my heart,

    Which comes into my heart at every moment.

    فَفُؤادي لَيسَ مِنها بِخَلي

    Whoever may have reached evening free of love,

    Yet my heart is not free of her;

    Or if his heart has reached evening devout,

    Then, by my life, my heart is surely wayward.
