أَمسىbecame at evening بِأَسماءَbecause of Asma هَذاthis القَلبُthe heart مَعموداlove-stricken
إِذاwhenever أَقولُI say صَحاit has sobered يَعتادُهُrevisits it عيداanew
At evening, this heart was stricken with love for Asma.
Whenever I say it has sobered, love visits it anew.
كَأَنَّنيas though I يَومَwhen أُمسيI reach evening لاnot تُكَلِّمُنيshe speaks to me
ذوone with بُغيَةٍa desire يَبتَغيseeks ماwhat لَيسَis not مَوجوداto be found
When evening comes and she does not speak to me, I am like
A seeker pursuing what cannot be found.
أَجريI hasten عَلىrelying on مَوعِدٍa promise مِنهاfrom her فَتُخلِفُنيbut she fails me
فَماyet not أَمَلُّI tire وَماand not تَوفىshe keeps المَواعيداthe promises
I hasten, trusting a promise from her, but she fails me;
Yet I do not tire, and she does not keep her promises.
كَأَنَّas though أَحوَرَa dark-eyed one مِنfrom among غِزلانِthe gazelles of ذيDhu بَقَرٍBaqar
أَهدىgave as a gift لَهاto her شَبَهَthe likeness of العَينَينِthe two eyes وَالجيداand the neck
It is as though a dark-eyed gazelle from Dhu Baqar
Had given her the likeness of its eyes, and its neck.
قامَتshe rose تَراءىshowing herself وَقَدand already جَدَّbecame urgent الرَحيلُdeparture بِناupon us
لِتَنكَأَto reopen القَرحَthe wound مِنin قَلبٍa heart قَدِalready اِصطيداhad been ensnared
She rose, showing herself, as departure pressed upon us,
To reopen the wound in a heart already ensnared,
بِمُشرِقٍwith a radiant face مِثلِlike قَرنِthe rim of الشَمسِthe sun بازِغَةًrising
وَمُسبَكِرٍّand long, flowing hair عَلىover لَبّاتِهاher upper chest سُوَداblack
With a radiant face like the rim of the rising sun,
And long black tresses flowing over her upper chest.
قَدindeed طالَhas lasted long مَطليmy being put off لَوَif only أَنَّthat اليَأسَdespair يَنفَعُنيcould help me
أَوor أَنthat أُصادِفَI might encounter مِنfrom تِلقائِهاher side جوداgenerosity
Long has she kept me waiting—if only despair could help me,
Or I could find some generosity on her part.
فَلَيسَfor ... not تَبذُلُshe gives ليto me عَفواًunasked وَأُكرِمُهاand I honor her
مِنfrom أَنthat تَرىshe should see عِندَناon our part فيin الحِرصِeagerness تَشديداexcessive insistence
For she gives me nothing unasked, yet I honor her too much
To let her see excessive eagerness on our part.
