She walks softly when she goes lightly clad,

like a wine-befuddled drunkard walking uphill.

After visiting her neighbor's house, she remains

with her palm resting over her liver.

Ah, who will aid a lovelorn, sorrowing heart,

captive, held in bondage, wounded and grief-stricken?

I rebuke it, yet it will not be deterred

from her, while my eye wears sleeplessness as kohl.

I chose a twig of an arak tree from Naʿmān

for Hind—but who will deliver it to Hind?

If you have not loved and do not know what love is,

then be a stone of dry rock, solid and hard.

They swayed until I said they would not leave,

and melted as the rich fat of a camel's hump melts.
