أَياO مَنyou who كانَwere ليfor me بَصَراًsight وَسَمعاًand hearing
وَكَيفَand how الصَبرُendurance عَنwithout بَصَريmy sight وَسَمعيand my hearing
O you who were my sight and hearing,
And how can I endure without my sight and hearing?
يُجَنُّis maddened بِذِكرِهاby remembering her أَبَداforever فُؤاديmy heart
يَفيضُoverflows كَماjust as يَفيضُoverflows الغَربُthe great water bucket دَمعيmy tears
My heart is forever maddened by the thought of her;
My tears overflow as a great water bucket overflows.
يَقولُsay العاذِلونَthe reproachers نَأَتshe has gone far away فَدَعهاso leave her
وَذَلِكَand that حينَat the time of تَهياميmy lovesick frenzy وَوَلعيand my passion
The reproachers say, “She has gone far away, so leave her”—
And that, while I am mad with love and passion!
أَأَهجُرُهاshall I forsake her وَأَقعُدُand sit لاnot أَراهاsee her
وَأَقطَعُهاand break with her وَماthough not هَمَّتshe contemplated بِقَطعيbreaking with me
Shall I forsake her and sit without seeing her,
And break with her, though she has not thought of breaking with me?
وَأُقسِمُand I swear لَوif حَلَمتُI dreamed بِهَجرِof forsaking هِندٍHind
لَضاقَwould surely fail بِهَجرِهاat forsaking her فيin النَومِsleep ذَرعيmy capacity to endure
And I swear, were I to dream of forsaking Hind,
I could not bear forsaking her, even in sleep.
