Indeed, the companions with whom I was
besotted called for parting and set off.

Their staff of unity, with their affairs dispersed,
was splinters flying apart on the day at al-Malā.

They lingered a while, then were driven onward
by a restless caravan that wears down distance.

I followed them with an eye whose tears
raced forth with the waters of its tear ducts.

It seemed injured, though nothing had struck it;
its pupil was choking on its tears.

They departed with Nuʿm; I shall not forget her
as long as leaves stir on a branch in a thicket.

Accustomed to curtained chambers, fair-skinned,
her skin is fragrant with rosy ambergris.

The gazelle bears a likeness to her form—
the breast, the two eyes, and the neck—

What nurtured her freely, and watered for her
the places where herbage grows, was a star rich in rain.

Walking even nearby exhausts her, just as
an unbroken, mud-caked camel rises in yielding sand.

or a bargain to be struck at the dwellings!

You are given little, a scant amount, when she is asked;
and stinginess is her nature, her character.

For I recall us when the dwelling held us together,
and no murk clouded the purity of our life.
