عاوَدَreturned to القَلبَthe heart مِنfrom سَلامَةَSalama نُصبُdistress
فَلِعَينَيَّso for my two eyes مِنfrom جَوىburning grief الحُبِّlove سَكبُa pouring of tears
Distress over Salama has returned to my heart;
So my eyes stream with tears from love's burning grief.
وَلَقَدand indeed قُلتُI said أَيُّهاO القَلبُheart ذوpossessing الشَوthe longing (first part)
قِcompletion of 'longing' الَّذيwhose لاnot يُحِبُّloves حُبَّكَyour love حِبُّa lover
And indeed I said: O heart full of
Longing, whose love no lover can match,
إِنَّهُindeed it is so قَدalready نَأىhas grown distant مَزارُdwelling سُلَيمىSulayma
وَعَداand kept away مَطلَبٌa quest عَنِfrom الوَصلِunion صَعبُdifficult
Indeed, Sulayma's dwelling has grown distant,
And a difficult quest has kept us from union.
قَدindeed أَرانيI see myself فيin سالِفِbygone الدَهرِtime لَوif only داlasted (first part)
مَcompletion of 'lasted' وَغُصنُand the bough الشَبابِyouth إِذwhen ذاكَthat رَطبُtender
I see myself in days gone by—if only they had
Lasted—with youth's bough still tender then.
وَلَهاand she has حِلَّةٌa robe مِنَof العَيشِlife ماno فيin
هاit لِمَنfor whoever يَبتَغيseeks المَلاحَةَbeauty عَتبُfault
And hers was a robe of life, with nothing in
It for anyone seeking beauty to fault.
فَعَداناthen kept us apart خَطبٌa calamity وَكُلُّand every مُحِبَّيtwo lovers (first part)
نِcompletion of 'two lovers' سَيَعدوهُماwill keep them both away عَنِfrom الوَصلِunion خَطبُa calamity
Then calamity parted us; and every pair of
Lovers will be kept from union by calamity.
وَكِلاناand both of us وَلَوand even though صَدَدتُI turned away وَصَدَّتand she turned away
مُستَهامٌlove-besotted بِهِwithin him مِنَof الحُبِّlove حَسبُenough
And both of us, though I turned away and she turned away,
Are love-besotted, each with love enough within.
لَوif عَلِمتِyou knew الهَوىpassion عَذَرتِyou would excuse وَلَكِنand yet
إِنَّماonly يَعذِرُexcuses المُحِبَّthe lover المُحِبُّthe lover
If you knew passion, you would excuse me; but
Only a lover excuses a lover.
