وَناهِدَةِand a full-breasted maiden الثَديَينِthe two breasts قُلتُI said لَهاto her اِتَّكيrecline
عَلىupon الرَملِthe sand مِنof جَبّانَةٍa graveyard لَمnot تُوَسَّدِbe given a pillow
And to a maiden with swelling breasts I said, “Recline
On the sand of a graveyard, without a pillow.”
فَقالَتso she said عَلىin اِسمِthe name اللَهِGod أَمرُكَyour command طاعَةٌobedience
وَإِنand although كُنتُI was قَدalready كُلِّفتُI was charged with ماwhat لَمnot أُعَوَّدِI had been accustomed to
She said, “In God's name; your command is obeyed,
Though I have been charged with what I am not accustomed to.”
فَماso not زِلتُI ceased فيin لَيلٍa night طَويلٍlong مُلَثِّماًkissing
لَذيذَsweet رُضابِsaliva المِسكِmusk كَالمُتَشَهِّدِlike one reciting the profession of faith
So through a long night I kept kissing
Her sweet, musky saliva, like one reciting the profession of faith.
فَلَمّاso when دَناdrew near الإِصباحُdaybreak قالَتshe said فَضَحتَنيyou have exposed me
فَقُمso rise غَيرَnot مَطرودٍdriven away وَإِنand if شِئتَyou wish فَاِزدَدِthen take more
When dawn drew near, she said, “You have exposed me;
So rise, though not driven away—and if you wish, take more.”
فَماso not اِزدَدتُI took more مِنهاfrom her غَيرَother than مَصِّsucking لِثاتِهاher gums
وَتَقبيلِand kissing فيهاher mouth وَالحَديثِand conversation المُرَدَّدِrepeated
But I took no more from her than sucking her gums,
And kissing her mouth, and repeated conversation.
تَزَوَّدتُI took provisions مِنهاfrom her وَاِتَّشَحتُand I wrapped myself بِمِرطِهاin her mantle
وَقُلتُand I said لِعَينَيَّto my two eyes اِسفَحاpour out, you two الدَمعَthe tears مِنfrom غَدِtomorrow
I took sustenance from her and wrapped myself in her mantle,
And said to my eyes, “Pour out tears from tomorrow on.”
فَقامَتthen she rose تُعَفّىeffacing بِالرِداءِwith the cloak مَكانَهاher place
وَتَطلُبُand she searched شَذراًloose beads مِنof جُمانٍpearls مُبَدَّدِscattered
Then she rose, brushing away her traces with her cloak,
And searching for loose beads among the scattered pearls.
