Tell me plainly today, O Nuʿm:

Is it union you offer, or estrangement?

For if it is a reproachful woman’s estrangement,

Then we may perish, though it is peace.

    Nuʿm reproaches you for love,

Yet she has no knowledge of it.

Were a healthy man to see Nuʿm,

Illness would surely pervade his body.

    Nuʿm unveiled in haste,

In Minā’s valley, while they were consecrated pilgrims,

A smooth cheek that, to an onlooker,

    Had neither flaw nor wound.
