أَجَدَّbecame intent غَداًtomorrow لِبَينِهِمُon their departure القَطينُthe campfolk
وَفاتَتناand eluded us بِهِمwith them دارٌa dwelling شَطونُfar distant
The campfolk are intent on departing tomorrow;
and a far-off home has taken them beyond our reach.
تَبِعتُهُمُI followed them بِطَرفِwith the gaze of العَينِthe eye حَتّىuntil
أَتىcame مِنfrom دونِهِمthis side of them خَرقٌan open desert بَطينُvast
I followed them with my gaze until
a vast stretch of desert came between us.
فَظَلَّso kept الوَجدُpassionate longing يُسعِرُنيsetting me ablaze كَأَنّيas though I were
أَخوa sufferer from رِبعٍquartan fever يُؤَرَّقُkept sleepless أَوor طَعينُone stabbed
So longing kept setting me aflame, as though I were
a sleepless sufferer from quartan fever, or a man stabbed.
يَقولُhe says مُجالِدٌMujalid لَمّاwhen رَآنيhe saw me
يُراجِعُنيkeeps addressing me الكَلامَspeech فَماyet not أُبينُI speak clearly
Mujalid said, on seeing me,
trying to draw me into speech, while I could not answer clearly:
أَحَقّاًis it really true? أَنَّthat حَيّاًa living person سَوفَwill يَقضيdie
وَقَدand indeed كَثُرَتhad multiplied بِصاحِبِيَin my companion الظُنونُmisgivings
“Is it true that a living man is about to die?”
And misgivings had multiplied in my companion.
تُقَرِّبُنيshe draws me close وَلَيسَand does not تَشُكُّshe doubts أَنّيthat I

She drew me close, not doubting that I
had been overcome, because of them, by the hidden sickness,
إِلىuntil أَنthat ذَرَّrose قَرنُthe rim of الشَمسِthe sun حَتّىuntil

until the sun's rim rose, and on until
it set—Huyun, one of them, for love of us.
أَقولُI say لِصاحِبَيَّto my two companions ضُحىًat midmorning أَنَخلٌare those palm trees?
بَداappeared لَكُماto you two بِعُمرَةَat Umrah أَمor سَفينُships
I said to my two companions at midmorning, “Are those palms
that appeared to you at Umrah, or ships?
أَمِor الأَظعانُthe travelling litters يَرفَعُهُنَّlifts them رَبعٌa stretch
مِنَof الرَقراقِthe shimmering mirage جالَwheeled بِهاwith them الحَرونُthe obstinate mirage
Or the travelling litters, lifted by a stretch
of shimmering mirage, its stubborn shimmer wheeling them about?”
عَلىupon البَغلاتِthe she-mules أَمثالٌlovely figures وَحورٌand dark-eyed beauties
لَمِثلِindeed like نَواعِمِsleek ones البُقّارِthe wild cattle عينُwide-eyed
On the she-mules are lovely figures and dark-eyed beauties,
wide-eyed, like the sleek wild cows:
نَواعِمُdelicate women لَمdid not يُخالِطهُنَّtouch them بُؤسٌhardship
وَلَمand not يُخلَطbe mingled بِنِعمَتِهِنَّwith their ease هونُhumiliation
delicate women untouched by hardship,
nor has humiliation been mingled with their ease.
