أَرِقتُI lay sleepless وَلَمand did not أَملِكI possess لِهَذاfor this الهَوىlove رَدّاresistance
وَأَورَثَنيand brought me حُبّيmy love وَكِتمانُهُand its concealment جَهداsuffering
I lay sleepless, unable to resist this love,
and my love and its concealment have brought me suffering.
كَتَمتُI concealed الهَوىlove حَتّىuntil بَرانيit wore me down وَشَفَّنيand wasted me away
وَعَزَّيتُand I consoled قَلباًa heart لاneither صَبوراًpatient وَلاnor جَلداsteadfast
I concealed love until it wore me down and wasted me away,
and consoled a heart neither patient nor steadfast.
إِذاwhenever قُلتُI said لاdo not تَهلِكperish أَسىًof sorrow وَصَبابَةًand yearning
عَصانيit defied me وَإِنand if عاتَبتُهُI reproached it زِدتُهُI increased it جِدّاin ardor
Whenever I said, 'Do not perish of sorrow and yearning,'
it defied me; and if I reproached it, I increased its ardor.
وَإِنّيand indeed I لَأَهواهاsurely love her وَأَصرِفُand I turn away جاهِداًstriving
حِذارَfor fear of عُيونِthe eyes of الناسِpeople عَنaway from بَيتِهاher house عَمداdeliberately
And indeed I love her, yet I struggle to turn away
from her house deliberately, for fear of people's eyes.
رَأَيتُكِI saw you يَوماًone day فَاِقتَبَستُso I caught حَرارَةًheat
فَياso, oh لَيتَهاif only it كانَتhad been عَلىupon كَبِديmy liver بَرداcoolness
I saw you one day and caught a burning heat—
ah, if only it had been coolness upon my liver!
هَويتُكِI loved you وَاِستَحلَتكِand found you sweet نَفسيmy soul فَأَقبِليso come
وَلاand do not تَجعَليmake تَقريبَناbringing us close مِنكُمُto you (plural) بُعداdistance
I loved you, and my soul found you sweet—so come,
and do not turn our nearness to you into distance.
