What harm to the ruins at al-Bulayyayn if they made

clear a greeting in return, or gave an answer?

Then on to the palace of Dhū al-ʿUshayrah, and al-Ṭāʾif—

now a waste, bereft of human company,

desolate, after I had seen it full of company,

with people raising domed tents there.

The campsite had changed since they left,

and the winds had whirled the dust about it.

All trace of al-Rabāb was effaced, and the

heart lay love-stricken and wounded in her wake.

And often I saw there a noble clan,

living life to the full, in comfort and youth,

    and beautiful, bashful maidens,

guarding their family honor in love.

They did not chatter overmuch, nor roam

the hillocks, calling to lambs and kids.

Sweet of sleeve and scent, wide-eyed,

like oryx of the sands, full-figured and of equal age.

When my heart loved al-Rabāb and refused

ever, until death, to forget al-Rabāb.

She drew the curtain between us and said

in secret—and I was not at a loss for a reply—

“You have grown estranged from your friend, and shown

    us today estrangement and avoidance.”

I said, “No, rather a slanderer has turned you away, and you have become

    aloof, accepting no reproach.”
