    وَعَدَلتِ عَنّا النَأيَ وَالهَجرا

    O ʿAmrah, parting from you has been decreed for a lifetime;

And you turned from us, choosing distance and estrangement.

A woman of Banū Awd, with whom I am enamored,

Bore a grudge against us, though we had done her no wrong.

And by God, I have never loved as I love you—

Neither a once-married woman nor a virgin ever born.

I do not linger for some need that has arisen,

Except to leave no effort untried for your sake.

And you see her coy charm whenever she speaks:

She leaves the daughters of his heart bent awry.

Like ripe, ready-to-pick dates falling from the

Date clusters, neither many nor few.

At al-Khayf are her lodging and her home,

And when she winters, she inhabits a palace in Mecca.

For her sake our riding camels were held back

For a month; after it, another month went by.
