أَقولُI say لِأَسماءَto Asma اِشتِكاءًin complaint وَلاand not أُرىI am seen
عَلىin إِثرِthe wake of شَيءٍsomething قَدalready تَفاوَتَhas grown distant مُجزَعاdistraught
I say to Asma in complaint, though I am not seen
I say to Asma, complaining, yet I see no
distraught over something now far beyond reach:
Sign that anything has changed, to my dismay
أَلَمdid … not تَعلَميyou (f.) know ياO أَسمَAsma أَنّيthat I مُغاضِبٌat odds with
أَحَبَّthe dearest of جَميعِall الناسِpeople لَوif جُمِّعواthey were gathered مَعاtogether
Did you not know, Asma, that I am at odds with
Don't you know, O Asma, that I am angry
the dearest of all people, were they gathered together,
With all people, were they gathered today
وَأَنَّand that اللَياليthe nights طُلنَhave grown long مُنذُsince هَجَرتِنيyou (f.) forsook me
وَكُنَّand they were قِصاراًshort قَبلَbefore أَنthat نَتَصَدَّعاwe part
and that the nights have grown long since you forsook me,
The nights since you abandoned me are long
and they were short before we parted,
And once short, before we grew apart
وَأَنand that لَمnot نَزَلwe have ceased مُنذُsince اِهتَجَرناwe shunned each other كَأَنَّنيas though I

مُعادٍan enemy to فِراشيmy bed ماnot أُلايِمُI feel at ease in مَضجَعاa resting-place
and that, since we shunned each other, we have remained as though I
Since we became estranged, I remain as though
were my bed’s enemy, finding no resting-place congenial?
I shared my bed with tribulation and smart
