Shall ties with Zaynab be kept, or shall she be forsaken?

Even if she has wronged us, shall we not forgive?

She has grown coy; what drives her on is that she

wants to reproach me, yet is too proud.

She knows that, for her, we hold

treasures of love that never show,

and affection, though the spiteful may speak

against her, however much the talker may say.

Nor do I forget the maiden's words

that morning at al-Muhassab, when they cast the pebbles:

“Will you not visit us, young man,

when those we fear sleep, heedless of us?”

I said, “Yes; station someone trustworthy

to ward off whoever watches us.

The sign of it will be that you hear

    the worshippers' call, O Maʿmar.”

So I came, while the people lay asleep.

There were two full-breasted maidens, and one soft of fingers,

    smooth of neck and dark-eyed.

I greeted them softly, and they greeted me,

while my heart trembled with fear.

She said, “You grew restless, and against me you heeded

the enemy's words and those of anyone who restrains you.”

I answered with the words of one endowed with insight,

attentive to her speech and clear-sighted:

“Do you seek out faults as grounds for parting,

though I have done no wrong to justify your betrayal?

If you have tried to sever the cords,

then the bond with you shall not be severed.

And if you have grown coy so as to reproach me,

then my hand is rich in goodwill toward you.”

Then a freeborn woman beside her said to her,

a newly blossoming maiden whose mouth was sweet to kiss:

    “Leave off reproaching the young man, and oblige him;

for love is too strong for him.”

So I spent the night free to command whatever I wished,

until a radiant, golden dawn appeared.

She leaned toward me whenever I urged her on,

as a heaped-up, tawny dune comes cascading down.

The scent of cloves wafts from her neckline,

and the fragrance of aloeswood and ambergris.

I spent the night—my night like a mere ‘no’ or ‘yes’—

beside her; rather, my night was shorter still.

And how can you shun the beloved's dwelling,

or endure without speaking of him?

She cast an eye on you, and you beheld her,

and whoever looks does not reproach.
