    وَلَكِنَّهُ وَاللَهِ يا حِبِّ ما يَخفى

    If love could ever stay hidden, it would stay hidden for us;

But by God, my beloved, it cannot stay hidden.

But may I be bereft of love, if it is like this:

Whenever a man falls in love, it brings him death.

For my soul finds no one's speech lovely but hers,

Even if what she tells us is ungrammatical, foolish speech.

Nor is she ever mentioned, my friend, without my finding her

Dear to me—or else my love for her grows twofold.

Nor have my eyes seen among people a lover

Yearn once, without my yearning for her a thousand times.

So she has not judged fairly between us, my friend:

Is it just of her that we should love and be spurned?
