أَصبَحَhas become القَلبُthe heart بِالقَتولِover al-Qatul (the slayer) حَزيناsorrowful
هائِمُdistraught اللُبِّthe mind لَوif only قَضَتهُshe repaid it الدُيوناthe debts
My heart has grown sorrowful over al-Qatul, the slayer,
Distraught in mind—if only she would settle her debts to it!
قالَhe said أَبشِرrejoice لَمّاwhen أَتاهاhe came to her رَسولٌa messenger

A messenger, after visiting her, said, “Rejoice!
Today we have seen her show you gentleness.”

If she intends sincere affection, my friend,
She has indeed tormented my heart for years.
أَرسَلَتshe sent word أَنَّناthat we نَخافُwe fear شَناتٍspiteful women

She sent word: “We fear spiteful women—
Liars around us—and spying eyes.

إِنif لَقَيناكَwe meet you مَرَّةًonce أَنthat تَخوناyou might betray
Keep away from us throughout the land, if you fear
That, should we meet you once, you might betray us.”
فَلَكِso you have اللَهُGod وَالأَمانَةُand fidelity وَالميand the covenant (first part)

“You have God as surety, my fidelity, and my covenant:
We shall not betray you as long as we live.

Beloved and honored in my eyes, as long as you live.

And trust shall not be despoiled in my keeping;
The most treacherous of people is whoever betrays the trustworthy.
ثُمَّthen أَنthat نَصرِفَwe redirect المَناسيبَthe love verses حَتّىuntil

And we shall turn our love verses elsewhere, so that
We leave people throwing out conjectures.

And I shall forsake all women but you.
Are you content?” She said, “Yes, we are content.”
