By my life, I discerned on Tuktam's face

the morning we met, a scowl and anger,

not for any wrong I had done her,

nor for any tale spread about me—how strange!

And I am surely forsaken whenever a spiteful foe speaks,

and some of what he says or fabricates happens one day to ring true.

So from now on, let patience restrain my soul, or let it die,

if one of your cords breaks and is cut off.

For among the people of Mecca, we need no one

but you, even if you have satisfied your desire through union with us.

And say to women who reproached you for love,

when one of them loses her reason over our union:

"Have we done what people did not do before us?

For before me, there were women and men who loved."
