بِاللَهِby God ياO ظَبيَgazelle of بَنيthe sons of الحارِثِal-Harith
بِاللَهِ يا ظَبيَ بَني الحارِثِ
هَلis? مَنone who وَفىkept faith بِالعَهدِwith the pledge كَالناكِثِlike one who breaks it
هَل مَن وَفى بِالعَهدِ كَالناكِثِ
By God, O gazelle of Banu al-Harith,
By Allah, O gazelle of Bani al-Harith
is one who keeps the pledge like one who breaks it?
Is there anyone who fulfills a promise like the violator?
لاdo not تَخدَعَنّيdeceive me بِالمُنىwith hopes باطِلاًfalsely
لا تَخدَعَنّي بِالمُنى باطِلاً
وَأَنتَwhile you بيwith me تَلعَبُplay كَالعابِثِlike a trifler
وَأَنتَ بي تَلعَبُ كَالعابِثِ
Do not beguile me with false hopes,
Do not deceive me with false hopes
while you toy with me like a trifler.
While you play with me like a frivolous one
حَتىuntil مَتىwhen أَنتَyou لَناtoward us هَكَذاlike this
حَتى مَتى أَنتَ لَنا هَكَذا
نَفسيmy soul فِداءٌa ransom لَكَfor you ياO حارِثيHarithi (of Banu al-Harith)
نَفسي فِداءٌ لَكَ يا حارِثي
How long will you be this way toward us?
How long will you be like this with us?
My soul is a ransom for you, O Harithi.

ياO مُنتَهىultimate object of هَمّيmy concern وَياand O مُنيَتيmy desire
يا مُنتَهى هَمّي وَيا مُنيَتي
وَياand O هَوىlove of نَفسيmy soul وَياand O وارِثيmy heir
وَيا هَوى نَفسي وَيا وارِثي
O ultimate object of my concern, and O my desire,
O goal of my worries and O my demise
and O my soul’s love, and O my heir.
