قَدindeed أَصابَhas afflicted القَلبَthe heart مِنfrom نُعمِNuʿm
سُقمُsickness داءٍof a disease لَيسَis not كَالسُقمِlike ordinary sickness
Because of Nuʿm, the heart has been stricken
A sickness with no match to sickness
with an illness unlike any other illness.
Has stricken my heart midst bounties,
إِنَّindeed نُعماًNuʿm أَقصَدَتhas struck down رَجُلاًa man
آمِناًunsuspecting بِالخَيفِat al-Khayf إِذwhen تَرميshe shoots
Nuʿm has indeed struck down a man,
Bounties that led a confident man
unsuspecting at al-Khayf, as she shoots
To roam freely and shoot arrows.

with well-spaced teeth, evenly grown,
With supple twigs, sweet-toothed,
sweet in tooth and taste,
And leaning graceful as vine bunches,
وَبِوَحفٍand with thick hair مائِلٍhanging down رَجَلٍwavy

and with thick, cascading, wavy hair,
One day it exposed to her neighbor,
like clusters from the grapevine.
But would not disclose my name to her.

وَهيَwhile she لاdoes not تَبوحُdisclose openly ليconcerning me بِاِسمِby name
One day she hinted to her neighbor,
"Ask him, then listen closely -
without openly mentioning me by name:
Who of us deserves more blame?"
إِسأَليهِask him ثُمَّتَthen اِستَمِعيlisten
أَيُّناwhich of us أَحَقُّmore deserving بِالظُلَمِof blame for wrongdoing
“Ask him, then listen:
"Grasp our conversation and judge between us -
which of us is more in the wrong?
I will accept the judgment."
وَاِفهَميand understand عَنّاfrom us تَحاوُرَناour exchange
وَاِحكُميand judge رَضيتُI accept بِالحُكمِthe judgment
And understand our exchange of words,
"Recite to him - did I approach him
and judge; I accept the judgment.
Angrily, knowingly causing offense?
وَاِنشُديهِand ask him earnestly هَلwhether أَتَيتُI have brought لَهُto him
سَخَطاًcause for anger مِنّيfrom me عَلىwith عِلمِknowledge
And ask him earnestly: have I given him
He comes to you with his argument -
cause for anger with me, knowingly?
So blame rests on him, I do not defend."
يَأتِكُمlet him come to you all مِنّيagainst me بِهُجَّتِهِunclear; likely “with his argument”
فَلَهُthen he shall have العُتبىamends وَلاand not أَحميI withhold
Let him bring you his case against me;
then he shall have amends, and I will not hold back.”
