أَوقَفتُhave I stopped? مِنof طَلَلٍa ruined dwelling عَلىby رَسمِa trace
بِلِوىat the bend of العَقيقِal-ʿAqīq يَلوحُgleams كَالوَشمِlike a tattoo
Have I stopped by the trace of a ruined dwelling,
At the bend of al-ʿAqīq, gleaming like a tattoo?
أَقوىbecame deserted وَأَقفَرَand grew desolate بَعدَafter ساكِنِهِits dweller
غَيرَexcept for النَعامِostriches يَرودُroams وَالأُدمِand white gazelles
It lay deserted and desolate after its dweller left,
Save for roaming ostriches and white gazelles.
فَوَقَفتُso I stood مِنfrom طَرَبٍlonging أُسائِلُهُI question it
وَالدَمعُand tears مِنّيfrom me بَيِّنُplainly apparent السَجمِstreaming
So I stood, stirred by longing, questioning it,
And my tears were plainly streaming.
وَذَكَرتُand I remembered نُعماًNuʿm إِذwhen وَقَفتُI stood بِهِbeside it
وَبَكيتُand I wept مِنfrom طَرَبٍlonging إِلىfor نُعمِNuʿm
And I remembered Nuʿm as I stood beside it,
And wept with longing for Nuʿm.
ياO نُعمُNuʿm آتيهِI come to it أُسائِلُهُI question it
فَيَزيدُنيso it adds to me سُقماًsickness عَلىupon سُقمِsickness
O Nuʿm, I come to it and question it,
So it adds sickness to my sickness.
ماwhat بالُis the matter with سَهمِكِyour arrow لَيسَdoes not يُخطِئُنيmiss me
وَيَطيشُand flies wide عَنكِof you حَزيمَةًresolute سَهميmy arrow
Why does your arrow never miss me,
Yet my arrow misses you, resolute as you are?
ياO نُعمَNuʿm ماnot لاقَيتُI have found بَعدَكُمُsince you left
لِمَجالِسِfor gatherings of اللَذّاتِpleasures مِنany طَعمِsavor
O Nuʿm, since you left I have not found
Any savor in gatherings of pleasure.
أَمّاas for النَهارُthe day فَأَنتِthen you are ماwhat شَجَنيgrieves me
وَاللَيلُand the night أَنتِyou are طَوائِفُpassing visions of الحُلمِdreams
As for the day, you are what grieves me,
And at night, you are the passing visions of dreams.
لاdo not تُظهِريreveal سِرّيmy secret فَإِنَّfor indeed حَديثَكُمyour words
فيin مَحسَنٍa fair place أَنأىfarther away مِنَthan النَجمِthe stars
Do not reveal my secret, for your words
Are in a fair place, farther off than the stars.
إِنّيindeed I رَأَيتُhave seen الحُبَّlove يَنقُصُهُdiminishes it
طولُthe length of الزَمانِtime وَحُبُّكُمand love for you يَنميgrows
Indeed, I have seen that love is diminished
By the length of time, yet love for you grows.
سَأَرُبُّI shall cherish وَصلَكِunion with you إِنif مَنَنتِyou bestow a favor بِهِwith it
فيin المُخِّthe marrow ياO سُكنىSuknā وَفيand in العَظمِthe bones
I shall cherish union with you, if you grant it,
In my marrow, O Suknā, and in my bones.
