Indeed, Layla sent word in secret: Stay,

and do not go far from us; keeping apart is better.

Perhaps the eyes watching our love

will be disbelieved about us, or sleep and grow heedless.

    فَلَمّا قَصَرنا السَيرَ عَنهُم تَقَوَّلوا

    People we trusted then spread our story;

so when we held back from visiting them, they made up tales.

So I said—despite its breadth, it had grown cramped for me,

my homeland, because of what had been said, and my eye streamed with tears—

I shall avoid the dwelling where you are,

but my gaze will turn toward you.

Do you not know that I—is that of any use

to you? And what I hide of longing is greater—

see straight so long as my gaze turns toward you?

But if my gaze turns toward anyone but you, then it is cross-eyed.
