Ah, Bakr, there has come by night

a phantom that stirred sleeplessness in me

    over Zaynab—she is my concern.

What, then, of her bond, worn thin?

    Full-limbed—when she turns away,

I grow accustomed to wakefulness and sleeplessness.

    Full-limbed—when she turns away,

you see her sash hanging loose,

and a leg that fills the anklet—

on it, you see the anklet choked tight.

    Whenever Zaynab is mentioned,

I shed tears in an unbroken stream,

as though a cloud were pouring down

abundant water with which it was laden.
