Ah, did the departing caravans stir you

    when they passed Muṭṭalaḥ?

Yes—and with their departure drawing near,

a bird crossed your path as a good omen.

They went along the flank of Rakak,

while the light of dawn had grown clear.

If anyone rejoiced at their parting,

it was another, not I, who was glad when they set out.

So she shook her head in surprise,

and said, 'A joker has jested.'

    نُباكِرُ ماءَهُ صُبُحا

    And they said, 'Our midday resting place is Qarn;

we shall reach its water early in the morning.'

Ah, how wondrous our meeting was,

with whoever bore ill will then kept out of sight!

I followed them with the corner of my eye,

until I was told I had given myself away.

    We bid one another farewell,

and each declared their love openly.
