And indeed I ask Umm al-Rabi‘

Before farewell for a little pleasure,

A pleasure with which to face farewell—

Indeed, I see the dwelling far from her.

    فَأَقبِل وَأَرسِل رَسولاً لَطيفا

    Then she said, ‘You have voiced everyone’s need;

So come, and send a discreet messenger

To a meeting-place he wished were

Secluded, where he would startle no eyes.’

And in wonder she laughed when she saw—

Quraybah, at al-Khayf—a band of halted riders.

She saw a man whose body was wan,

A night-traveller across country, long maintaining a swift pace,

A man of journeys, who gives his mounts no rest

    After exhaustion—only a swift departure.

So if you see me, travel has clothed me

In a dark hue and a lean body,

Then dark-eyed beauties, like autumn gazelles,

Were brought out, walking with short, slow steps.

    Their sleeves breathed out perfume

And laurel mingled with diluted musk.

They stir from the depths of hearts

Longing, whenever they beat the tambourines.

Whenever one marvel passed, they never ceased

Calling a lively heart to merriment,

On a level, pebbly plain watered by clouds,

Whether in spring or in autumn.
