    If only Hind would fulfill for us what she promises,

    and heal our souls of what they suffer,

    and acted on her own, just once!

    Only he who does not act for himself is helpless.

    They said she asked her female neighbors,

    having undressed one day to cool herself:

    “Do you see me as he describes me—

    I adjure you by God—or does he go too far?”

    Then they laughed together and said to her:

    “In every eye, the one it loves is beautiful.”

    وَقَديماً كانَ في الناسِ الحَسَد

    It was envy they had been made to bear because of her;

    and envy has long existed among people.

    A graceful maiden, smiling to reveal her cool, white teeth,

    when she bares them—daisies or hailstones.

    And she has two eyes, in whose gaze

    is the contrast of black and white; her neck has a graceful sway.

    مَعمَعانُ الصَيفِ أَضحى يَتَّقِد

    A tender woman, cool in summer's heat, when

    the fierce heat of summer begins to blaze;

    warm in winter, a blanket for the young man

    beneath the night, when bitter cold envelops him.

    And indeed I remember when you said to her,

    while my tears streamed over my cheek.

    I said, “Who are you?” She said, “I am the one

    whom longing has wasted and grief has worn away.

    ما لِمَقتولٍ قَتَلناهُ قَوَد

    We are the people of al-Khayf, among the people of Mina;

    for anyone we have slain, there is no blood-retribution.”

    فَتَسَمَّينَ فَقالَت أَنا هِند

    I said, “Welcome! You are what we seek;

    so tell me your names.” She said, “I am Hind.”

    My heart was simply maddened and grew lovesick for

    a spear-straight maiden moving smoothly in Sabiri cloth.

    إِنَّما نَحنُ وَهُم شَيءٌ أَحَد

    Your people are but neighbors of ours;

    we and they are but one.

    They told me that for me she had breathed

    upon knots—ah, how lovely those knots!

    Whenever I said, “When is our rendezvous?”

    Hind laughed and said, “The day after tomorrow.”
