At Wajra lie ruins whose traces have faded,
With the ruins of Wajrah time has effaced their features
And their ancient sites stand deserted after their inhabitants have gone.
And after friends have gone it is desolate and dreary
تَلوحُremain visible عَلىover طولِthe length of الزَمانِtime عِراصُهاtheir open grounds

Their open grounds still show through the long passage of time,
Throughout the ages loom their battlements
As tattoos show upon a maiden's palm.
As patterns on a girl's hand glow and teary
وَقَفتُI stood بِهَthere وَالعَينُand the eye شامِلَةُfull of القَذىgrit
كَعَينٍlike the eye of طَريفٍone with an injured eye ماnever يَجِفُّdries سُجومُهاits flow of tears
I stood there, my eye full of grit,
I stood amidst them while my eye enveloped the haze
Like the eye of one injured, whose streaming tears never dry.
Like that of a sprightly gazelle unweary
فَذَلِكَand that هاجَstirred الشَوقَlonging مِنbecause of أُمِّUmm نَوفَلٍNawfal
وَذِكرىand remembrance لِنَفسٍfor a soul جَمَّةًabundant ماnever تَريمُهاleaves it
That, then, stirred longing for Umm Nawfal,
Thus did yearning surge in mother of Nawfal’s son
And a wealth of memories that never leave the soul.
And memory of a soul its every whim and vagary
فَقَدfor indeed أَدرَكَتshe obtained عِنديfrom me مِنَof الوُدِّaffection فَوقَmore than ماwhat
تَمَنَّتshe wished for بِغَيبٍin secret أَوor تَمَنّىwished for حَميمُهاher close friend
For she has won from me more affection than
With me it has attained beyond what it has wished
She wished for in secret, or her close friend wished for her.
In absent covetousness or fondest reverie
وَإِنand if قاسَمَتshe shared فيin وُدِّهِhis love ذَهَبَتshe went off بِهِwith it
جَميعاًentirely وَلَمand did not يَرجِعreturn بِشَيءٍwith anything قَسيمُهاher fellow sharer
And if she shared in his love, she would carry it off
If shared amongst passion’s kin, it takes the whole
Entirely, and her fellow sharer would return with nothing.
And nothing to its partner goes in parity
