وَلَقَدand indeed قُلتُI said يَومَon the day بانواthey departed لِبَكرٍto Bakr
أَنتَyou ياO بَكرُBakr سُقتَناyou drove us ذاthis المَساقاcourse
And indeed I said to Bakr, the day they departed:
I said, when they set out for Bakr,
You, O Bakr, drove us along this course.
"O Bakr, you led us on smoothly."
أَنتَyou قَرَّبتَنيyou brought me near إِلىto الحينِdeath حَتّىuntil
حُمِّلَwas burdened القَلبُthe heart مِنهُمُfrom them ماwhat أَطاقاit could bear
You brought me near to death, until
You brought me close to them until
the heart was burdened by them with all it could bear.
The heart was laden with more than it could bear.
وَلَقَدand indeed قُلتُI said لاno أَباfather لَكَfor you دَعنيleave me
إِنَّindeed حَتفيmy death فيin أَنto أَزورَI visit الرِفاقاthe companions
And indeed I said: May you have no father—leave me!
And I said, "No harm to you, leave me be!
Indeed, my death lies in visiting the companions.
For my destiny lies in visiting friends."
إِنَّindeed قَصريmy utmost lot أَنthat يُشعَرَbe imbued with القَلبُthe heart سُقماًsickness
مِنfrom سُلَيمىSulayma مُخامِراًpervading وَاِشتِياقاand longing
Indeed, my lot is for the heart to be imbued with sickness
My failing is that the heart feels sick
from Sulayma, pervading it, and with longing.
With yearning for Sulaima's wine.
قَدonce أَراناI recall us وَلاand not أُسَرُّI am pleased بِأَنat the fact that تَجbring… (first part of تَجمَعَ)
مَعَ…together (completes تَجمَعَ) دارٌa house وَلاand not نُباليwe care الفِراقَparting
I recall us: I took no joy in our being brought
They showed us - though I'm not pleased that you came -
together by a house, nor did we care about parting.
A house, and we care not for parting.
ثُمَّthen وَلَّواthey turned away وَماand what قَرابَةُcloseness مَنone who حَلَّhas settled
بِنَجدٍin Najd مِمَّنfrom one who يَحِلُّdwells in العِراقاIraq
Then they turned away—what closeness is there between one who has settled
Then they left, and no kinship remains
in Najd and one who dwells in Iraq?
With one who dwells in Nejd, from one who inhabits Iraq.
