An encampment has stirred my heart—

    now deserted—and a desolate dwelling:

a dwelling of Hind's, now effaced,

    once inhabited for a time.

And there came to me with news of their departure

a clever, gentle bearer of tidings—

a graceful maiden, a companion of Hind's own age.

That girl is a gazelle, just reaching womanhood.

    The company is departing,

before dawn, making an early start.

    بَل دونَهُنَّ الصُوَرُ

    They departed with women like figurines;

nay, images fall short of them.

Among them is Hind; would that I

might live as long as she lives,

until, when there comes to her

death, fate comes to me too.
