أَلاAh! حَيِّgreet الَّتيher who قامَتrose
عَلىin خَوفٍfear تُحَيِّيناshe greets us
Ah, greet her who rose
Alas! For the one who stood
in fear to greet us.
On fear, giving us life
فَفاضَتthen flowed عَبرَةٌa tear مِنهاfrom her
فَكادَand almost الدَمعُthe tears يُبكيناmake us weep
Then a tear flowed from her,
Her tears overflowed
and the tears almost made us weep.
Nearly making us weep
لَئِنif indeed شَطَّتgrew distant بِهاwith her دارٌa dwelling
عَنوجٌwayward بِالهَوىin love حيناfor a time
Though a dwelling has borne her far away—
If a house parts with her
wayward in love for a time—
Passionately loving us once
لَقَدindeed كُنّاwe used to نُؤاتيهاyield to her
وَقَدand indeed كانَتshe used to تُؤاتيناyield to us
we did once yield to her,
We used to visit her
and she would yield to us.
And she’d visit us too
فَلاso no قُربٌnearness لَهاto her يَشفيheals
وَلَيسَand does not البُعدُdistance يُسليناconsole us
So nearness to her brings no cure,
Neither closeness can heal her
and distance gives us no solace.
Nor does distance console us
وَقَدand indeed قالَتshe said لِتِربَيهاto her two age-mates
وَرَجعُand the echo القَولِof the words يَعنيناconcerns us
And she had said to her two companions,
She told her loved ones
and the echo of her words concerned us:
And her words pierced us
أَلاAh! ياoh! لَيتَماif only شِعريmy knowing
وَماand what قَدindeed كانَhe used to يَمنيناhold out hopes to us

“Ah, if only I knew—
Alas! If only we’d known
and what he used to promise us—
What she wished and desired
أَموفٍwill he keep faith? بِالَّذيwith what قالَhe said
وَماand what قَدindeed كانَhe used to يُعطيناgive us
will he be true to what he said
Trusting in what he said
and what he used to offer us?”
And what he would give us
فَقالَتthen said تِربُهاher companion ظَنّيmy belief
بِهِabout him أَنthat سَوفَwill يَجزيناrepay us
Then her companion said: “My belief
Then her loved one guessed
about him is that he will repay us,
He would reward us

Strictly forbade warning us
