Oh, if only I had crossed the sand ridge toward you—

the ridge of al-Muʿarraf—or passed beyond Dhū ʿUshar.

Indeed, dwelling in a land where I do not see you

is—be certain of it—a truly sorrowful sojourn.

And I have not grown weary; rather, my love for you has increased.

And whenever I remembered you, I remained like one dazed,

shedding tears like one beset by sickness.

Yet no sickness besets me but memories.

How often I have remembered you—if only I were rewarded for remembering you!

O you who, of all people, most resemble the moon!

Indeed, I do rejoice if I walk facing it,

out of love for seeing the one you resemble in appearance.

And I have rejoiced in nothing that came after you,

nor have I given my love to any human being but you.
