The companions have departed; their parting is anguish.

And sometimes their dwelling lies far away.

They have not accustomed you, with their dwelling distant,

To close neighborliness—so why do you lament?

And indeed you see that she is not softened

By the heart's passionate attachment to her memory.

They claimed that parting would come the day after tomorrow,

So the heart trembles at what they have resolved.

They swore; indeed, they had severed their bond,

And I swore a thousand times, just as they swore.

I have not forgotten where we stood, and where she stood,

To exchange words, while our very doom stood by.

    كُلٌّ لِوَشكِ البَينِ مُعتَرِفُ

    We complain, and she complains of some of what she felt;

Each acknowledges the imminence of parting.

And her words, with her tears streaming:

“Lessen your longing when you depart

From us, when your dwelling takes you far away,

And your fickle heart calls for another woman.”
