أُحِبُّI love لِحُبِّfor love of عَبلَةَAbla كُلَّevery صِهرٍin-law
عَلِمتُI have known بِهِof him لِعَبلَةَof Abla أَوor صَديقِfriend
For love of Abla, I love every in-law
I love to love my cousin's husband
I know Abla has, or any friend of hers.
I learned of him through my cousin or a friend
وَلَولاand were it not for أَنthat تُعَنِّفَنيrebukes me قُرَيشٌQuraysh

And were it not for Quraysh’s rebuking me
If I were not afraid of being condemned by Quraysh
and the words of the closest, compassionate adviser,
And of the advice of the most caring counselor
لَقُلتُI would say إِذاwhen التَقَيناwe met قَبِّلينيkiss me
وَلَوand even if كُنّاwe were عَلىon ظَهرِsurface الطَريقِthe road
I would say, when we met, “Kiss me,”
I would say, when we meet, “Kiss me!”
even if we were on the open road.
Even if we were in the middle of the road
فَماfor … not قَلبُthe heart of اِبنِson of عَبدِservant of اللَهِGod فيهاconcerning her
بِصاحٍat all sober فيin الحَياةِlife وَلاnor مُفيقِregaining consciousness
For Ibn Abd Allah’s heart, where she is concerned,
So Ibn Abdullah's heart is not inclined
is neither sober in this life nor coming to its senses.
To one noisy in life or awake
