O friend, do you know, now that it has grown dry—

my eye—from the anguish of love I endure,

when I saw her dwellings worn away,

and their landmarks changed since I left,

and recalled her sitting place and ours,

at nightfall, at the foot of the highland,

and a message from her reproaching me?

So I sent a reproach back to Hind:

“Do not blame me for going out, for I cannot

    reach you except with difficulty.

By God and the Ancient House, indeed,

you have equaled, in my eyes, the Garden of Eternity.

So defy those who slander us, for yours is

my sincere affection, by deliberate choice.”
